Delta Fishing Report and fishing tips:
Spring striped bass have begun heading up the Sacramento River’s Lower Delta, and soon anglers start catching some in the Sacramento and San Joaquin rivers! Schoolie striped bass , 4 to 6 pounders are now in the bays, currently in Suisun, Honker and Grizzly our fish report staff has said.
Mid- March is when adults head into the Delta, where you fish on their way to their spawning grounds in the Sacramento and San Joaquin rivers. Stripers lay their eggs in these rivers in May and then head for the saltwater.
Best time to catch striped bass in the Delta and Delta rivers? Is therefore from March through May .
The spring run gets striped bass anglers excited because water warms up and fishing conditions are a lot more favorable, water temperatures rise above 50 degrees and schoolie- sized ?sh are being caught now.
Striped bass in California complete their spawning runs where they don’t need gravel. In fact, they just eject their eggs and milt into the open water. If there is one consistency at all to it, it’s that a good portion of the ?sh move en mass, and that’s when the ?shing is at it’s best.
LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION
Our fish report staff conclude they show in three areas. On the Napa River, the San Joaquin and Sacramento Rivers, and from the Sacramento on into the Feather and American rivers
For now concentration of the lower Sacramento River, Montezuma Slough, in front of Decker Island in front of Rio Vista, the channel in front of Sherman Lake and Sherman itself, towards the end of Steamboat Slough, up to Cache Slough, and into the lower part of Lindsay Slough.
low ?ow rates down the Sacramento River will play a role in this year’s spring ?shery. Lower water does mean they won‘t go as far up the river systems, so the upward range at around Meridian this yea is probable.
With any luck that higher flows could get them back up into the Colusa area, but at the 2,500 cfs range would keep them below Knights Landing.
Spawn behavior that includes schooling, aggressive feeding and territorial attitudes. Rebels with jigs on spreaders, use silver plugs alone or live bait.
On the Napa River the PGE tower and down around the Maritime Academy,.
2016 Delta Fishing Map Sacracamento
Going up the Sacramento River in the Clarksburg and Freeport areas and up through Sacramento with action on the Capitol Street Bridge, the Rice Mill, the yellow weir, and Marker 6.
San Joaquin River should see early action up at Buoy 25 off the mouth of the False River and into the False itself, at the San Andreas Shoal and around the corner up the North Mokelumnie River, off the mouth of Potato Slough, and finally the Medford Island area and on up to Stockton.
Whew! What a great fishery!
In the Feather River, action is already starting from Shanghai Bend down to Verona at the mouth
In the American, action is more con?ned down around the mouth. And that’s also a good area for bank anglers. There are two major ways to go after them, either troll or drift. Drifters use anchovies, shiners or mudsuckers, or shrimp.
